Spring Sing Philanthropy: Coaches vs. Cancer

The Spring Sing & Coaches v. Cancer Relationship

Coaches v. Cancer became the beneficiary of Spring Sing funds in 2005. To date, more than $40,000 has been donated. In 2010, a new record was set with the donation of $14,188.00. In 2011, the bar was raised again when students raised $15,866.48 for Coaches v. Cancer.

In 2009, the Spring Sing Executive Committee decided to make Coaches v. Cancer more than just a place to write a check to. Since, the Executive Committee has annually visited local children's hospitals to talk about the program and visit with patients.

On Friday, November 12, 2010 the Spring Sing Executive Team visited St. Francis Children's Hospital to deliver the left over Coaches v. Cancer shirts from Spring Sing 2010.

Coaches V. Cancer

The Coaches vs. Cancer program was created in 1993 by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The program exists to leverage the strength, community leadership and celebrity of our country’s basketball coaches to fight cancer. The program raises awareness to the cancer problem and in turn, reduces cancer risk through education programs while raising funds for American Cancer Society research, advocacy, education and patient services programs. Since its inception, the Coaches vs. Cancer program has raised more than $30 million to benefit the American Cancer Society, the nation’s leading voluntary health organization.

The OSU Coaches vs Cancer (CvC) campaign ranks first in the Big 12, first in the High Plains division and in the top ten nationally in dollars raised. Both the OSU CvC campaign and former coach Eddie Sutton have been nationally recognized with awards from the American Cancer Society for their fundraising efforts. Just in the past five years, OSU’s Coaches vs Cancer campaign has raised over $600,000 for the fight against cancer. In addition to various fundraisers throughout the year, Coach Travis Ford and his Cowboys have conducted various hospital visits to pediatric oncology units throughout the state of Oklahoma.
