COMPLETE YOUR EDUCATION

Parents

We are happy your student has expressed interest in joining the sorority community at Oklahoma State University. Sorority membership at any university offers your student a “home away from home" providing friendship, academic support and leadership development and service opportunities which will assist your daughter in a successful future. OSU has a number of sororities with unique qualities, well suited to each of its memberships. Your student will have no trouble choosing an organization to join.

If you have any more questions about  sorority life, please contact the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs by e-mail at gogreek@okstate.edu or by phone at 405.744.5490.

Why should your student join a fraternity or sorority?

  • Fraternity and sorority members have on average higher grades than their unaffiliated counterparts. For example, the community's cumulative GPA for the Fall 2012 semester was a 3.1738 while the unaffiliated students earned a 2.8200.
  • Fraternity and sorority members have higher four and six-year graduation rates when compared to their unaffiliated counterparts.
  • Fraternity and sorority members hold the majority of campus leadership positions.
  • The All-University Intramural Champions are usually fraternity and/or sorority teams.
  • Fraternity and sorority members are extremely involved in America's Greatest Homecoming celebration.
  • Fraternity and sorority alumni continue to be generous donors to the University.

FRIENDSHIP

At Oklahoma State University, sororities enable young women to establish strong friendships that last far beyond their college years. Affiliation provides members with an opportunity to interact with other students of all ages, backgrounds and interests.

Members meet a diverse group of people within the Greek community and other student organizations. Membership offers a network of support while students are making the transition to college life.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

The sorority community makes academics a top priority knowing your student is at OSU to get an education. Many chapters have an academic development program which enforces a strict academic policy that includes maintaining a respectable grade point average to participate in chapter activities. Further, each  sorority has its own scholarship program that will help your student succeed academically as well as learn to effectively manage their time away from classes. Scholarship programs can include study hours, mentors, support technology and/or study files. In addition, many of the chapter houses include quiet places to study as well as resource rooms or libraries complete with computers including online connections as well as copy/fax machines.

Sorority student grades, as well as four and six-year graduation rates, are consistently higher than non-affiliated students. The all-Greek average at OSU has been higher than the non-Greek average for more than the past 30 consecutive semesters. For example, the Fall 2012 All-Greek GPA was a 3.1738 while the All-Non-Greek GPA was 2.8200.

LEADERSHIP

The sorority community is strongly united and growing in numbers. On campus, sorority members have proven themselves as empowered, strong campus leaders. For example, sorority members comprise the majority of campus leadership positions such as Student Government Association Executive Board, Camp Cowboy Directors, Dance Marathon founders, etc.

Because sorority chapters are self-governing bodies in which the members take on the responsibilities of running the organization, sorority life is a special living and learning environment. The hands-on experience of holding an office in the chapter helps members develop leadership, organization and communication skills. Chapters and members interact and make connections with other student organizations and departments on campus as a result.

Sorority members learn the importance of dedication, working with others, responsibility and self-reliance. In addition, there are many leadership opportunities within the fraternity and sorority community apart from those within each chapter. Whether your student is a natural leader, wants to cultivate his/her skills or just wants to be involved, fraternity/sorority membership will help your student develop their unique, individual potential.

SERVICE

One of the most gratifying aspects of sorority membership is the sense of satisfaction and pride that comes with involvement in philanthropy and community service. Sorority students and alumni throughout North America recognize local and national organizations in need of aid by donating their time, talent and funds through their special philanthropy and community service projects. OSU fraternity and sorority students raise tens of thousands of dollars and devote thousands of hours in hands-on service each year to a variety of projects that benefit people on a local and national level. In 2011, students raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars and gave over 70,000 hours of their time. In addition to the individual chapter projects, the community comes together several times per year to perform joint projects for both the campus and the community, like Spring Sing for example. Whether raising money or donating time, service is an essential part of the fraternal experience.

HAZING

A common concern with fraternity and sorority affiliation is hazing. All the fraternity and sorority governing bodies at OSU have policies against hazing. The University has a policy against hazing. It is also against the law in Oklahoma and 43 other states. Congress has passed legislation that keeps an individual who has hazed someone from receiving federal financial aid. Hazing is not tolerated at Oklahoma State University. If you have specific concerns, questions or comments, please contact the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs. Hazing can be reported using the information at the bottom of this page.
